the challenges female artists face
what can be done about it
What do the Studies Show?
Several studies have explored the pervasive double standards in the music industry, highlighting how women – even though there have been improvements in resent years – often are judged more harshly, both personally and professionally, compared to their male counterparts.
Completely unexpectedly and without prior announcement, yet another symphonic song is now being released, sung by Elin Brimheim Heinesen. On December 1 this year, Elin released the complete symphonic album “Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð” with songs she has composed to poems by her father, Jens Paula Heinesen. But now an additional symphonic piece is being released, also sung by her, which no one knew about. This time it is a Christmas song called “Jólafriður á jørð” by the Italian composer Enzo De Rosa.
Elin Brimheim Heinesen has previously collaborated with Enzo De Rosa on her album “Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð”. Enzo has composed the new Christmas song, which is also recorded with a symphony orchestra and with Elin as the vocal soloist, as well as eight little girls – all around 10–11 years old – from the Eysturskúlin Girls’ Choir, conducted by Joanna Johansen. Elin herself has adapted the original English lyrics for the song.
Honored His Son With a Christmas Song About Peace on Earth
This is how Enzo De Rosa explains how the song came to be: My son Leonardo was born on November 11th, 2011. To mark this joyful occasion, I asked my dear friend and songwriter, Paul Oxley, to participate by writing lyrics for a song I composed for the event. The aim was to convey the profound meaning of this moment in connection with the time of year. The Christmas season is a time when all humans should remember to be one united people. The snow that blankets the edges of houses, cities, and nations conceals boundaries, reminding everyone that limits are merely imaginary and serve only to divide. This fall I asked composer and singer Elin Brimheim Heinesen from the Faroe Islands, whom I have worked with before on another project, if she could translate my song to her native language – Faroese – and sing it in Faroese. She did so and we made the recordings in november 2023. Elin also found a choir of 8 girls, aged 10-11 years, to sing the backing vocals. This song is very dear to me, so I am grateful that now we can present it to the public in a beautiful symphonic form.
Is Very Fond of the Faroese Language
That autumn, Enzo De Rosa decided to make a symphonic recording of the Christmas song with Elin as vocal soloist. He asked her if she could write lyrics in Faroese, because he is very fond of the Faroese language and thinks it sounds so beautiful. As Enzo puts it: “It sounds like an ancient echo from times long past.” Elin explains:
“Enzo De Rosa is an exceptionally talented musician and composer who, over the last 40 years, has worked with countless musicians and singers all over the world. So I feel it is a great honour that Enzo approached me and entrusted me both with writing the lyrics and singing the Christmas song he composed for his son. It means a lot to me.”
Faroese Girls’ Choir Sings Together With Elin
Elin got in touch with Joanna Johansen to have the Eysturskúlin Girls’ Choir sing together with her on the release. The vocal and orchestral recordings took place at the end of November this year. Enzo himself mixed the orchestral music, while the Faroese music producer Bárður Háberg recorded and mixed the vocals by Elin and the girls’ choir. The orchestral part was recorded by the Moscow Metropolitan Session Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Podgoretsky. The mastering was done by Alex Gordon at Abbey Road Studios.

LYRICS
1. Flykrurnar dala av himmali hátt,
sum gimsteinar glampa og dansa í nátt.
Gøturnar tómar, frystar í snjó.
Kvirra nú ræður, alt hvílir í ró,
tí at nú fjalir kavin hvørt stríð og hvørt sár,
fjalir øll landamørk, líðing og tár.
Her á jørð valdar friður,
nú vit øll halda jól.
2. Jólini breiða seg um allan heim.
Fólk smílast fegin, og øll halda gleim,
syngja av hjarta eitt blítt takkarljóð.
Tónleikur, látur, øll eru so góð,
tí nú savnast vit saman eitt bil, knýta bond,
dansa um træið so fitt hond í hond.
Her á jørð valdar friður,
nú vit øll halda jól.
3. Lalala…
Her á jørð valdar friður,
nú vit øll halda jól,
tí vit halda jól.
Tí halda vit øll nú jól.

It is not every day that new Faroese symphonic music is released on record. But now Elin Brimheim Heinesen will present the new album with music by her and lyrics by her father, the Faroese writer Jens Pauli Heinsen, at a reception in Perlan on Saturday evening, December 2 at 20:00.
Jens Pauli Heinesen, one of the Faroe Islands’ greatest writers, was celebrated last year with a grand honorary concert in the Nordic House in Tórshavn on his 90th birthday on 12 November. Magnificent symphonic music was arranged for six of his poems, to which Elin Brimheim Heinesen, daughter of Jens Pauli Heinesen, had set music. Sound recordings of these works are now finally being released on an album – both on CD and vinyl, in addition to digital platforms.

About the album “Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð”
The album has been given the title “Eitt d´pi av dýrari tíð”” (A Chasm of Precious Time) after the first song that Elin composed for a poem by her father. The song could be heard for the first time in 1988 on the album NALJA by Elin & Kári. In 2002, a symphonic version was made for a documentary made by Gulla Øregaard about Jens Pauli Heinesen.
Now the symphonic version is finally being released on record in an updated mix, along with five other songs Elin has composed to poems by her father.
Elin has also translated the poems and sung them in English, so that there will be 12 tracks on the album – i.e. six songs in Faroese, in addition to the same six songs in English.
Four of the recordings were made with the world-renowned symphony orchestra The Czech National Symphony Orchestra and the Faroese choir Tarira, and two of the recordings were made with the equally well-known City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and Tórshavn’s Male Choir. The Italian composer Enzo De Rosa has arranged five of the songs for symphony orchestra and choir, and the Danish composer Søren Hyldgaard has arranged the song “Eitt dýpi av dýrari tið”. Elin is the lead singer on all the recordings.
The album is financed via crowd funding and by Betri Samtakið, MOWI, KT-húsið, Mentamálaráðið (The Faroese Ministry of Culture), Mentanargrunnur Landsins (the National Cultural Fund), Tórshavn Municipality, Vágar Municipality, in addition to Elin herself.

My old website host’s servers were exposed to a ransomware attack on August 18th, 2023, which meant that they lost almost all data on their servers, which again affected the around 3.700 websites that they hosted – among others mine!
All my data were deleted and could NOT be retrieved, unfortunately, because the host’s backup-servers were also compromised for some reason.
So here I am, quite frustrated about having to accept that I lost my website, which I had been working on for many, many years. To be exact from 2008 and up until now. All my e-mails from the same period were deleted too.
I have now moved over to a new website host and I am in the process of rebuilding my website manually – from scratch. It will take time, because there were at least a hundred pages with texts, photos, videos, audio-files and other stuff, so it takes a LOT of work to get back on track. So bear with me as long as it takes to restore my website.
Kind regards Elin Brimheim Heinesen
P.S. Just a suggestion: Meanwhile, you are welcome to spend some time listening to my album “Handan stjørnurnar” (Beyond the stars):
