The late Jens Pauli Heinesen, who is considered to be one of the most prominent writers in the Faroe Islands, was celebrated in connection with his 90th birthday on November 12th, 2022, with a great honor event / concert in the Nordic House in Tórshavn on the day of his birthday. The focus at the event was on six of his poems that Elin Brimheim Heinesen, his daughter, has set music to. Magnificent symphonic music has been arranged for the six compositions by the extraordinary Italian composer Enzo De Rosa and was performed at the tribute concert by the Faroe Islands Symphony Orchestra, Enzo De Rosa on the grand piano, the choirs Tarira and Tórshavn’s Male Choir with Elin as vocal soloist. Studio recordings of the musical works are now finally being released on an album – both on CD and on vinyl, in addition to digital platforms on the web.

RECORDINGS

The album has been titled: “Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð” (A Chasm of Precious Time), which was the first song that Elin composed to a poem by her father. The symphonic version could be heard for the first time in 2002 in a documentary film about Jens Pauli Heinesen, which Gulla Øregaard made in connection with his 70th birthday. Now the song is finally being released on CD and on vinyl in an updated mix, together with five other songs that Elin has composed to poems by her father and recorded both in Faroese and in English. Elin has translated the six poems into English and has recorded the songs in English as well, so that there are 6 + 6 songs on the album. Six songs in Faroese, and then the same six songs in English.

Four of the recordings were made with the famous symphony orchestra The Czech National Symphony Orchestra and the choir Tarira, and two recordings were made with The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tórshavn’s Male Choir. Elin Brimheim Heinesen is the vocal soloist in all the recordings.

The record label TUTL publishes the album. The album is financed via Hópfigging.fo (crowdfunding) and by Betri Samtakið, MOWI, KT-húsið, Mentamálaráðiráð, Mentanargrunnur Landsins, Tórshavnar Kommuna, Vága Kommuna, in addition to Elin herself.

WHY PUBLISH THIS ALBUM

The importance that Jens Pauli Heinesen’s literary works have had for the Faroese society cannot be underestimated. No one has written as much prose about life in the Faroe Islands during the Second World War and in the period leading up to the turn of the millennium as Jens Pauli Heinesen. His extensive literature, which counts around 40 works, has enriched the Faroese people and the Faroese language. His prose reflects Faroese culture and has strengthened and developed Faroese identity.

In his prose, Jens Pauli sheds light on eternally valid, universal subjects as relevant today as when they were written, but seen from a certain point of view that most Faroese can identify with. His works play an important identity-creating role. They take up a lot of space in the Faroese book register and are a great contribution to the total reading material in Faroese, so important to the survival of Faroese as a language.

On this album, the spotlight is put on his poems, which, although few, deserve to be highlighted. In the late 80s, Jens Pauli’s daughter, Elin Brimheim Heinesen, set music to a poem by her father for the first time. It was the poem Eitt dýpi av dýrari tið (A Chasm of Precious Time) – a song, which all Faroese know today. The song was first released in 1988 on the album NALJA by Elin & Kári. In 2002, the song was recorded in a symphonic version for a documentary by Gulla Øregaard about Jens Pauli Heinesen, made in connection with his 70th birthday. The now deceased, Danish composer Søren Hyldgaard arranged the music for symphony orchestra. The work has since become national heritage and is a highly valued Faroese classic nowadays.

Recently, Elin again set music to another beautiful poem by her father, called Sóleyan lýsir um fløtur (Buttercups Light Up the Meadows). After a successful crowd funding campaign, the song was arranged for symphony orchestra by the Italian composer Enzo De Rosa and recorded with the City of Prague Philhar-monic Orchestra, Tórshavn’s Men’s Choir and Elin as the lead vocalist. The song was released as a single and as a music video on November 12th, 2021.

Elin and Enzo decided to continue working together, this time on four other songs Elin made to poems by her father: Flóttin (The Refugee), Heystnáttin (Autumn Night), Eg gangi við einum djúpi (The Chasm Deep Within) and Sorgin er vøkur við (Sorrow is Beautiful Too), all of which are strong poems on relevant subjects, which are still relevant today. At Enzo’s request, Elin translated (or re-wrote with respect) all the poems into English, so that non-Faroese people can listen to this album and understand what is being sung about.

The orchestral parts were recorded in Prague, Czech Republic on June 15th, 2022 with one of Europe’s best symphony orchestras, The Czech National Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Vladimir Martinka. Production manager Laura Lungu oversaw the recording. The choir Tarira sang the choral parts and Elin Brimheim Heinesen is the lead vocalist.

The four new pieces of music, in addition to the two that have been published as singles already – Sóleyan lýsir um fløtur and Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð (this time in an updated mix) – are now all released together on this album, both in the original Faroese language as well as in English.

JENS PAULI HEINESEN

Jens Pauli Heinesen was born on November 12th, 1932 and died on July 19th, 2011, aged 78. He grew up in Sandavágur, but moved to Tórshavn at the early age of 14 years old, where he started as an office apprentice. This was not for him, so he got his parents’ consent to go to school. He first took his preliminary exam and then his matriculation exam in Tórshavn. He then trained as a teacher at the Emdrupborg State Seminary in Denmark. After completing his teacher’s exam in 1956, he worked as a teacher until he quit in 1970, and then devoted himself fulltime to his writing career, as he had wanted since he was a small boy.

Jens Pauli was the Faroe Islands’ most prolific writer of his time. He wrote a total of around 40 works – novels, short stories, plays etc. – about the life lived, especially in the village where he grew up as a child and in his early teenage years, and not least in the capital, where the author lived most of his life. As a writer he covered a wide range of subjects. The subjects were, among others, the artist and society, the child and its world, rural vs. city life, in addition to the difficult paths of love. A recurring theme is the victim and the tormentor. Literature lovers have said that the quality of several of Jens Pauli’s works is fully on par with world literature.

Jens Pauli was awarded the Faroese Cultural Prize four times – in 1959 for the short story collection Hin vakra kvirran (The beautiful silence), in 1969 for the short story collection Aldurnar spæla á sandi (The waves play on the beach), in 1973 for the novel Frænir eitur ormurin (Fafner is the Dragon’s Name) and in 1993 for the novel Bláfelli (Blue Mountain) and the book series in seven volumes Á ferð inn í eina óendaliga søgu (Journey into an endless story). The books Leikur tín er sum hin ljósi dagur (Your Play is Like the Bright Day) and Bláfelli were nominated for the Nordic Culture Prize in 1987 and in 1995 respectively. In addition, Jens Pauli Heinesen received the Faroe Islands Government’s Cultural Prize in 1999 for his literary works as a whole.

Jens Pauli Heinesen was chairman of the Faroese Writers’ Association in the years 1968-1975 and was named an honorary member of the association, as well as of Der Deutsch-Färöische Freundeskreis e. V., of the Society of Sweden-Faroe Islands and was also honored by Rithøfundasamband Íslands. He was a member for many years in the Nordic Society, which i.a. published the book Færøerne i dag (Faroes today) in 1966, which he edited. And he was one of the producers of the documentary Jamen se nu Færøerne (But Look at the Faroes), with the subtitle: We are not building the Faroes for practical reasons, in 1975. Jens Pauli Heinesen has been translated into several languages, such as Icelandic, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Greenlandic and German.

ELIN BRIMHEIM HEINESEN

Elin Brimheim Heinesen, born June 25th, 1958, is Jens Pauli Heinesen’s daughter. Elin has composed the six songs on this album to poems by her father and translated (or rewritten) the songs to English. She is also the lead vocalist on this album.

Elin has a Master’s Degree in Aesthetics and Culture and an education in Business Economics, as well as a Sceenwriting Degree from the Danish Film School. She has a long career in communication, media and marketing in the Faroe Islands and in Denmark, where she lived for 25 years.

In her home country, she is best known as a singer/ composer. In addition to a few singles, she has released three albums: NALJA with Kári L. Jacobsen in 1988, Yndisløg – ein ferð aftur í farnar tíðir (Treasured Songs – A Trip Down Memory Lane), with the acoustic group Ad Libitum in 2010, and Handan Stjørnurnar (Beyond the Stars) as a soloist in 2018. Furthermore, she has sung duets and backing choir on several albums and singles by other artists.

One of her most beloved songs is the title song of this album Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð (A Chasm of Precious Time). When Kringvarp Føroya (Faroese National TV & Radio) in 2018 asked its listeners to rate the best Faroese songs the last 50 years, this song came in as nr. 4. It was released the first time in 1988 and rearranged for symphony orchestra in 2002 for a documentary about Jens Pauli Heinesen, but this version has not been released on an album by Elin before. Not until now. This time in an updated mix.

ENZO DE ROSA

Enzo De Rosa, born January 21st, 1964, is a composer, arranger and virtuoso concert pianist from Naples, Italy, now residing in Montreal, Canada. He has arranged Elin Brimheim Heinesen’s compositions on this album to symphony orchestra and choir.

Enzo has more than 30 years of experience with many different genres of music. He started taking piano lessons at the age of 6. Since then, he has developed his musical skills with several well-known piano masters. He is trained in composition and modern music, in addition to playing the organ and harpsichord. He has a long and impressive career as a professional musician in many different countries – such as Italy, France, Finland, Bulgaria, Egypt, Israel, Canada among others – where he has worked with over 600 great music projects – composed, arranged for orchestra and produced music both for film, TV, theatre, opera, music albums, etc.

LAURA LUNGU

Laura Lungu, executive producer of this project, has studied music since childhood, graduating in music with violin specialisation. She graduated with honours in Musicology and Performing Arts at Bologna University, followed by a Master’s degree in Musical Theatre Direction.

She succeeded in developing both an international career as a violinist and at the same time as manager in the entertainment industry, working with artists such as Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras, Ennio Morricone, Andrea Bocelli and many others. She recorded to date more than 300 movie soundtracks as violinist, music producer, recording musical supervisor and orchestra contractor for SONY, EMI, WARNER, BMG, Buena Vista, RAI, MEDIASET, etc.

Laura has extensive experience – among other things she has taken the lead role positions of Music Producer, Artistic Director, Recording producer, Artists Manager as well as Production Director for shows, concerts, music recordings, festivals, corporate and private events with high visibility in Italy and abroad.

She is the founder and General Manager of Concertissimo Entertainment since 1998, and the founder and Artistic Director of the Concertissimo Orchestra, established since 2007 in Rome, specialised in movie soundtracks recording with orchestra and choirs.

TARIRA

The choir Tarira is an outstanding choir, which since 2002 has pleased audiences with their high quality singing on an international  level. Their name ‘Tarira’ is inspired by the author William Heinesen and comes from his novel “The Lost Musicians”, where Tarira is presented as a dream vision.

The choir sings renaissance music works, Christmas music and new compositions, they have commissioned from both Faroese composers and composers from abroad, which is why they have premiered several new songs, in addition to publishing albums.

The choir has had several conductors since the beginning. They started out with Sunleif Rasmussen, but also Kári Bæk and Jóhannes Andreassen have conducted the choir. On this album, Bernharður Wilkinson is the conductor.

Tarira has had performances with music artists such as Teitur and Tórshavn’s Men’s Choir. They have presented great choir works such as Shakespeare and others. The response is alway the same: Their performances are flawless and on an outstanding high level, resulting in the choir receiving several awards for their performances and achievements.

TÓRSHAVN’S MEN’S CHOIR

Tórshavnar Manskór was founded, when the choir had their first performance together with the brass band GHM in the Nordic House in Tórshavn March 22, 1987. The choir has been on several tours outside the Faroes – such as in Iceland; Denmark; Wales; Scotland; Shetland; the Baltic countries – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania; Austria and Russia.

Tórshavnar Manskór published their first album in 1997, with the simple title: Tórshavnar Manskór.

Their second album was released in 1999, and had the title “Vit eru Føroyingar” (We Are Faroese), taken from the first line in the ironic lyrics to the folk ballad “Kvæði fremsta framtakskappa landsins” (The Country’s Prime Entrepeneurial Hero) with lyrics by Regin Dahl and music by Kári Bæk, about being a cultured Faroese person.

Their thrird ablum came out in 2008 and had the title “Væl má gagnast!” (Bon Appetite!) taken from the last line in the humorous song “Matlepin” (The Menu) by Nyholm Debes. This is the first CD in the Faroes with surround sound, where the listener is surrounded by sound just like in a good concert hall.

The fourth album was published in 2009 and has the title “Kantata til 900 ára ólavsøkuhátíðina” (Cantata for the Sct. Olav’s Wake 900 Years Jubilee) ususally called Ólavsøkukantatan, which Edward Mitens og J. Waagstein composed to the Sct. Olav’s Wake jubilee in 1930, in mmemory of King Olav Haraldsson, who died in 1030.

Tórshavnar Manskór has participated on two singles released by Elin Brimheim Heinesen with lyrics by her father Jens Pauli Heinesen. The songs are “Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð” (A Chasm of Precious Time” in 2002 og “Sóleyan lýsir um fløtur” (Buttercups Light Up The Meadows) in 2021, which now are also on this album.

THE CZECH NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Performing and continuously growing for 26 years, the Czech National Symphony Orchestra (CNSO) has earned an enviable reputation among Europe’s top symphonic ensembles. The Czech National Symphony Orchestra was set up in 1993 by trumpet player Jan Hasenöhrl along with the legendary conductor Zden?k Košler. In 1996, the American Paul Freeman took over as Chief Conductor, and remained in this position for an amazing ten years.

Now the orchestra has worked with its principal conductor Libor Pešek since 2007 – a period which could be described as exceptional both in terms of its subscription series as well as five hugely successful tours around Great Britain, as well as the historic feat of the recording marathon between 2007 and 2017 during which time Libor Pešek and the CNSO managed to record the complete symphonies of Gustav Mahler.

Libor Pešek stepped down from his role in the spring of 2019 and was replaced by the American conductor Steven Mercurio. This fantastic musician and former pupil of Leonard Bernstein has worked with the orchestra for several years now and the partnership promises to bring about a number of exceptional new projects.

THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra is a world-renown professional symphony orchestra, founded over 60 years ago. The orchestra features predominantly Czech classical and jazz musicians…with guest players selected from musicians studying at the Conservatoire in Prague. The orchestra started out, just after the end of World War II, as the in-house orchestra for the huge Barrandov Film Studios, regularly playing music for film and animation productions made at the world famous Prague studios, as well as featuring in the historic Krátký Film productions (meaning “short film,” in Czech), and productions for the former Czechoslovak Television.

At that time the orchestra was known as Filmový Symfonický Orchestr (FISYO) (The Film Symphony Orchestra). Many wonderful national and international film scores were recorded by this orchestra up until 1989, mostly at Smečky Sound Recording Studio.

Fully privatized after the Velvet Revolution, the orchestra was given its new name by music producer James Fitzpatrick in 1992 , so that today The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, under the management of Josef Pokluda , selects the finest musicians from all of the main Czech orchestras, who continue to play and record music together (usually every day of the week) for every type of orchestral project including CD albums, major international films, television series, video games, and even ringtones – both for the Czech Republic market but chiefly for clients & media productions all around the world.

After the acclaim of their various recordings the orchestra have undertaken numerous European concerts of film and TV music, Planet Earth music and Video Games Live, as well as standard classical repertoire. They also frequently play concerts in Prague and also have travelled to China, the Lebanon, various other Middle Eastern countries and the highlight being their 2010 concerts in Santiago, Chile with conductor Nic Raine and guest artist Itzhak Perlman.

FØROYA SYMFONIORKESTUR

The Faroe Islands Symphony Orchestra is not featured on the album, but they are mentioned here, because they were a big part of the phenomenal performance of all the six songs on the album at the honor concert for the author, Jens Pauli Heinesen, that took place in the Nordic House in Tórshavn on his 90th birthday, November 12th, 2022, under conduction of Bernharður Wilkinson, with the choirs Tarira and Tórshavnar Manskór, Enzo De Rosa on the grand Piano and Elin as the lead vocalist.

Kringvarp Føroya, the National TV & Radio recorded the whole event on video. And at easter in the spring of 2023, Kringvarp Føroya, the Public National TV, broadcasted the honor concert for Jens Pauli Heinesen – in two parts on April 6th and April 7th, 2023.

The Faroe Islands Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1983. A music school was established on probation the year before with some trained musicians, and in 1983 the Føroya Musikkskúli (Faroe Islands Music School) was finally established with about 10 music teachers. This, as well as the new beautiful Nordic House, which opened in June the same year, meant that now suddenly there were both professional musicians and a good setting, which made it possible to run a symphony orchestra.

It was the music teachers Magna Synnevåg and Kanny Sambleben who, together with Alex Sólstein, Bogi Lützen and others, established the new orchestra, which was named Føroya Symfoniorkestur. Faroese and foreign educated musicians in the Faroes together with the best students in the music school, as well as some professional musicians from abroad were to man the new orchestra. This is the form that has been used all the years since. The good development these years, however, has been that the skills and the number of Faroese musicians has grown steadily.

For the past 20 years, the orchestra has made great strides. The activities have grown considerably from about two annual concerts to about 25 concerts in 2014 e.g. The progress has been purposeful. This is i.a. a result of increased funding and the following increased activity, together with the good work the music schools do, where of several of the professional musicians in the orchestra act as teachers. Some have also been in the music school since childhood and in the symphony orchestra before going abroad to take higher music education.

The orchestra’s staff is usually around 70 musicians and is conducted by Bernhardur Wilkinson. In addition, there is also a choir with about 120 good singers, who have all been through auditions, as well as a children’s choir of about 200 children. The Faroese Singing Teachers’ Association is responsible for the large children’s choir arranging the Children and Christmas Concert, which the Faroese Symphony Orchestra has played the first weekend in December for the past many years.

The orchestra has been on three trips abroad in the last 30 years. In Shetland, Denmark and in connection with the celebration of the orchestra’s 30th anniversary, the symphony orchestra had a concert in Akureyri and in the world-famous Harpa in Reykjavík in Iceland in the autumn of 2013.

“The lyrics to this song are originally from a theatre play my father wrote, that was set on stage in the  beginning of the 70’s. The lyrics were originally written to another melody – a Swedish melody called “En valsmelodi”. But I liked the poem so much and thought it deserved its own original melody. It’s about a world in shambles and about having to flee from all the things and the people one cares about, and not least about facing an uncertain future. The poem has gained renewed relevance. It can, for instance, be seen in the light of the current situation with refugees fleeing from devastating wars in their country or from natural disasters caused by climate change or other causes.”

“I composed this song and made a choir arrangement back in 2012, especially to an event arranged to celebrate my father’s 80th birthday.  These are lyrics that he wrote when he was only a young teenager, 18 years old, about the dramatic, violent – and sometimes eerie – forces of nature, which prevail in the fall, especially at night, killing off all vegetation, calling out all the ghosts, elves and giants. When I set music to the poem, I was inspired by the Faroese tradition of singing old medieval ballads and dancing chain dance, because often these old folk ballads are also very dramatic.”

“It is no secret that my father suffered from deep depressions from time to time. When you read this poem, it becomes apparent that he knew what he was talking about.  This is a poem about the existential crisis many people experience at the low points in their life. Life can be tough, and most people are somehow wounded by bad life experiences. When life isn’t as kind to people as they would wish, they may start to believe that life is not fair and get bitter and angry at everything. This bitterness can destroy people from within and make them hateful. But perhaps there is relief in religious or spiritual beliefs – at least in the belief in the goodness of mankind. That was one thing my father never lost faith in.”

“This is a song that I composed in 2012 to a poem by my father and arranged for a choir in connection with the celebration of his 80th birthday. He died a year earlier, unfortunately. My father wrote the poem in the 1960’s when the Cold War was at its peak. At that time everyone had a sense of something ominous that could hit them anytime out of nowhere. But, still, people just had to live life, as if the threat did not exist. This probably caused a sort of fatalism among people. But, typical of my father, he always had an eye for the big picture and for nature, which just exists without the slightest regard for what we humans do. After all, the days, the nights, the seasons just keep coming and going, and the buttercup blossoms incessantly. In the great context, man is so infinitely small compared to much greater powers at play, which can shatter the whole world in the blink of an eye. Quite relevant to think about, now that humanity had to face the threat of the Corona pandemic, war and an ensuing global financial crisis.”

12. A CHASM OF PRECIOUS TIME

“This was the first song I wrote to a poem by my father. My father wrote the poem only 21 years old, right after his then girl friend had broken up with him. The poem is not about unhappy love, though. On the contrary. It is more about hope – about how life is a precious gift even when we go through hard times and life seems meaningless. I think my father wrote this poem to comfort himself. The song was first released on an album back in 1988, and later again in 2002, when my father turned 70, but this time in a symphonic version with orchestra, a male choir and me as the lead vocalist. Back then Gulla Øregaard, a documentarist, wanted to make a TV-documentary about my father, and wanted to use this song in her documentary. Of course, I said yes, and then she raised funding, which made it possible to record the song with a symphony orchestra. I asked a Danish composer, Søren Hyldgaard, to help making a symphonic arrangement for the song. The music was recorded in Prague with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Søren and I had an excellent cooperation, but unfortunately, Søren died some years ago due to illness. It is no exaggeration to say that the song “Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð” got a very good reception. In a poll conducted by the Faroe Islands national radio, Kringvarp Føroya, in 2018, the listeners were asked which song they thought was the best of all the thousands of Faroese songs published in the last 50 years. “Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð” came in as the fourth most popular song, which I am obviously very proud of.
